Self-Similar Surface

This abstract sculpture, with three-fold rotational symmetry as well as mirror symmetry, is based on a spatial development of a fractal curve through the first three iterations. Self-similarity, containing forms that are similar to one another on different scales, is a key property of fractals. An effort was made to maintain negative curvature wherever possible, a hallmark of hyperbolic surfaces embedded in Euclidean three-dimensional space. The sculpture measures a little over 18 inches in diameter.
